The guide and creator of geoGata is David Monge. Naturalist and communicator by vocation, trained geologist, son, grandson and brother of teachers. From childhood, his vocation is nature, science and scientific disclosure. David first visited Almeria and Cabo de Gata in 2001. In 2008, during a vacation, he started creating geoGata. Today he deeply knows the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Nature Park and the natural heritage of Andalusia. His passion and respect for these spaces is reflected in a project that is a turning point in the sustainable use of nature for educational and tourism purposes. If you want to know more, you can read this interview (Spanish).
Wild East Nature has been created by David Monge for sharing knowledge about the Natural and Human Heritage in eastern Andalucía, and for selling top quality touring services to our visitors, in order to make them enjoy and understand our wildlife, our landscapes, and our humascapes. The main tool is David's ability to transmit his knowledge and love for the Heritage. We drive a comfortable, 7 seater, Wi-Fi equipped 4WD, and we have a set of optics including spotting and astronomical telescopes, binoculars, field microscope, some other science instruments and plenty of literature, all available to our clients.
Where are we?
We are in the heart of the Cabo de Gata - Níjar Nature Park and Geopark. The nearest city and international airport is Almería, just 15 minutes from the Natural Park. Daily flights are available to and from Barcelona, Madrid, Seville and Melilla (North Africa). The number of connections increase dramaticly in summer.
Other important nearby places are Granada, Capital of the Alhambra (2 hours drive from Almería; regional airport), Malaga, Capital of Costa del Sol (3 hours; international airport), Alicante (3 hours; international airport). There are bus and train conections to most of the important cities in spain.
The Wild East territory
In our lives, surrounded by the civilization, we only have a few opportunities to feel the magnificence of a virgin landscape and to be surrounded by the silence of Nature. Spain is a classical sightseeing and leisure destination, and in some aspects this has been a harmful concept for the territory in terms of it preservation and the protection of the Natural and Human Heritage.
Our territory, what we call The Wild East, is a region where the climate, the difficult access, the lack of development and the rich Natural and Cultural Heritage have prevented the coast from being over built and the inland from being over exploited and excessively ruined. Nonetheless, in the last decade the huge increase in the demand of sports activities in the environment (nothing farthest to protection than mentioning that term simply as tourists attractor) and the lack of environmental awareness of a lot of visitors, some administrations and companies providing tour services, is giving rise to a problem of overcrowding and deterioration of the Wild East virgin lands.
The Geogata project was born to contribute to stop this worrying phenomenon, by means of environmental education and sustainable tourism, with the aim of preserving what I think is the most contrasted landscape and humanscape in Europe.
I am convinced that keeping aware population inside the protected areas is the best strategy to preserve them, and that's why I decided, almost three years ago and after years of study and meditation, to establish and position myself as a reference Wildlife and Heritage guide in the Cabo de Gata - Níjar Nature Park and Geopark and in East Andalucía.
Hiring my services you're seriously cooperating with the conservation of this magnificent and forgotten land.
